The Way of Light

The Column of Glory

Meditation on the Pathway of Ascent

In the vast tapestry of Manichaean cosmology, few images capture the imagination quite like the Column of Glory—that luminous pillar connecting our earthly realm to the Paradise of Light above. More than mere metaphor, this vertical axis represents both the structure of reality and the path each soul must traverse on its journey home.

The Cosmic Architecture

According to Manichaean teaching, the Column of Glory (Stūn ī waxšīft in Middle Persian) extends from the depths of the material world through all the spheres of existence, piercing the boundary between the Middle Realm and the Kingdom of Light. It is described as a pillar of pure radiance, woven from the substance of divine light itself.

The column serves as the cosmic infrastructure through which liberated light particles ascend. When the Ships of Light—the Sun and Moon—collect freed souls and purified light, they travel along this great pillar in their eternal circuit, carrying their precious cargo upward to the realm from which it originated.

The Column in Ancient Texts:

"It is the Column of Glory, the pathway of the righteous, the ladder of the ascetics, the stair of those who are chosen, ascending to the height, to the place of the Perfect Man, to the land of the Living Ones."

— From the Manichaean Psalm-Book

The Inner Column

Yet the Column of Glory exists not only in cosmic space but within each human being. The Manichaean adept learns to recognize an interior pillar of light running through the center of their being—what later traditions might call the subtle body or the axis mundi of the microcosm.

This inner column connects the divine spark imprisoned in the heart to the celestial realms above. Through spiritual practice—prayer, fasting, meditation, and ethical living—the practitioner gradually purifies and strengthens this interior pathway, making it a viable route for the soul's eventual ascent.

The Seven Stations

Traditional Manichaean meditation describes seven stations or levels along the Column of Glory, corresponding to different degrees of purification and enlightenment:

1. The Station of Awakening - recognizing one's true nature as light
2. The Station of Separation - distinguishing light from darkness within
3. The Station of Purification - cleansing through the Three Seals
4. The Station of Ascent - beginning the upward journey
5. The Station of Luminosity - radiating recovered light
6. The Station of Union - merging with the celestial light streams
7. The Station of Return - arriving at the Paradise of Light

Meditation Practice

How might a modern seeker work with the Column of Glory in their spiritual practice? Here is a meditation drawn from traditional Manichaean techniques, adapted for contemporary practitioners:

✦ The Column of Light Meditation ✦

Preparation: Find a quiet space. Sit comfortably with spine erect. Face east if possible, toward the rising sun—symbol of the Ship of Light ascending.

Stage 1 - Grounding (5 minutes):
Close your eyes. Breathe naturally. Feel the weight of your body, acknowledging the material realm you currently inhabit. Do not fight it; simply recognize it as the temporary prison of light.

Stage 2 - Recognition (5 minutes):
Turn awareness to your heart center. Visualize a small point of golden light—your divine spark. This is not created by you; it is the eternal light of the Father, temporarily residing within.

Stage 3 - The Column Appears (10 minutes):
From this point of light in your heart, imagine a beam of radiance extending upward through your crown and beyond, reaching infinitely toward the heavens. Simultaneously, a beam extends downward, grounding you.

You sit at the crossing point of this vertical axis of light. This is the Column of Glory running through your being. It has always been there; you are simply learning to perceive it.

Stage 4 - Purification (10 minutes):
With each in-breath, draw pure golden light down from above through the column. With each out-breath, allow darkness—confusion, attachment, heaviness—to drain away downward and dissipate.

The column grows brighter and clearer. You are actively participating in the cosmic work of separating light from darkness.

Stage 5 - Ascent (10 minutes):
When ready, let your awareness rise gradually through the column. Feel yourself climbing this ladder of light. You pass through layers of materiality, through the atmospheric realm, through the spheres of Moon and Sun.

Do not strain or force. Simply rest in the upward movement, trusting the column to guide you toward the Light.

Stage 6 - Return and Integration (5 minutes):
Gently allow awareness to descend back through the column to your physical body. You return changed—a bit more light has been freed, the pathway a bit more clear.

Open your eyes slowly. The Column remains, even if invisible now to ordinary awareness.

The Column in Daily Life

The practice of the Column does not end on the meditation cushion. The aware Manichaean maintains an ongoing relationship with this vertical axis throughout the day.

When faced with ethical choices, one might ask: "Does this action strengthen my column of light, or does it entangle me further in material darkness?" When consuming food, the question becomes: "Am I taking in light (through pure, vegetarian foods), and am I eating in such a way that frees light rather than binding it?"

In speech, we consider whether our words ascend the column like prayers, or whether they fall heavy with darkness, anger, and deception.

"Every moment of mindful living is a step upward on the Column. Every act of compassion strengthens its luminosity. Every truth spoken clarifies its path. You are not waiting to climb this column after death—you are climbing it now, with every choice."

The Ultimate Journey

Traditional Manichaean eschatology teaches that at death, the soul of the righteous ascends the Column of Glory, guided by the Great Nous (Divine Mind) and welcomed by the light beings who assist in the cosmic rescue operation. The soul passes through the stations, being progressively purified, until it reaches the highest realms and merges back into the ocean of light from which it came.

For those insufficiently purified, another journey begins—a return to material existence to continue the work of liberation. The Column remains, patient and eternal, waiting for all light to make the journey home.

Concluding Reflection

The Column of Glory reminds us that we are not isolated individuals struggling alone in darkness. We are part of a cosmic architecture of redemption, a universal process of light returning to light. The column connects us vertically to our divine source, and horizontally to all other beings making the same journey.

In meditation, in ethics, in daily awareness, we climb. Not toward some distant future reward, but into our own deepest reality—the truth that we are, have always been, and will always be, light temporarily dwelling in shadow, finding our way home.

"Blessed are those who recognize the Column within themselves,
For they shall ascend while still walking the earth."
